Actress Mallory Newbrough will showcase ten songs in her one woman cabaret show “Born To Shine” dinner show next Saturday, August 9 at the Supper Club at The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton, with dinner beginning at 6 p.m. and the show beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m.
“This will be the first time that I will be performing as myself in a show that is autobiographical. I will be performing songs from the significant musicals that I appeared in South Florida theaters over the years,” said Newbrough.
Over the 11 years Newbrough has performed in South Florida, she will highlight the most significant songs that spearheaded her career in musical theater.“The opening song will be ‘Cabaret’ and it represents my first role as Sally in ‘Cabaret’ at Lake Worth Playhouse and it marked my first collaboration with director Clayton Phillips, who became my mentor over the years. Clayton (Phillips) is important in my life and he will be my director when I perform in ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ later this summer in New Hampshire,” said Newbrough.
Newbrough will do more than sing ten songs in concert.. She will reenact the songs as performers that Newbrough portrayed on stage, using different costumes and wigs to become Janis Joplin and Bette Midler, among other performers.
“I am very proud to have read everything I could about both Janis Joplin and Bette Midler before I portrayed them in musicals. The preparation helped me gain a deeper understanding of how they expressed themselves in song.”
Newbrough portrayed Joplin in the musical “Beehive” at The Wick and Midler in “Bette & Barry” at Island City Stage in Wilton Manors. She won a Carbonnel Award for her role as Joplin.
As Joplin, Newbrough will sing “Cry Baby’ wearing long shaggy hair and as Midler will sing “Superstar” with red curly hair. She will don a blonde wig as Peggy Lee to sing “Fever”
Newbrough’s other songs in “Born To Shine” will be from the musicals “Guys and Dolls” and “Little Shop of Horrors” among other musicals.
One of the highlights of the show will be Newbrough’s dramatic interpretation of the song “Superstar” as Midler. Although the original Leon Russell penned song never became a hit song for Midler as it was for Karen Carpenter, the original song has more drama than the hit song.. Specifically, Newbrough will sing the original lyrics in the song as “I wish to sleep with you again” as opposed to Karen Carpenter’s interpretation of the lyrics as “I wish to be with you again”
“I interpret ‘Superstar’ as a love letter to a long lost love. Bette (Midler) has a flair for dramatics and wanted the song to be more personal to emote more from the audience. I perform the song as Bette would, a very sensual, more amorous experience for the audience to connect with,” said Newbrough.
Along with Newbrough’s dramatic interpretations of Joplin and Midler, the audience will learn more about her life offstage as well. Born and raised in Annapolis, Newbrough’s parents guided and inspired her into an acting career because they both excelled in community theater.
“Both my parents showed me the ropes, the good and the bad about having a career performing on stage. They also encouraged me when I decided to pursue a professional acting career in Ithaca, New York to pursue my BFA in musical theater.”
Newbrough has performed in over 35 plays and musicals over her 11 year career. She won a second Carbonnel Award for her portrayal of Mrs. Wormwood in “Matilda The Musical” at Slow Burn Theater in Ft. Lauderdale. To learn more about Mallory Newbrough, go to mallorynewbrough.com
