Michael Maliakel Will Join Cast of Broadway’s ‘The Great Gatsby’

The musical, based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, continues at the Broadway Theatre.

Michael Maliakel, formerly seen in the title role of Broadway’s Aladdin, will join the cast of Broadway’s The Great Gatsby later this month.

Maliakel will step into the role of Nick Carraway beginning March 31 at the Broadway Theatre. He will succeed Noah J. Ricketts.

Also joining the cast will be new ensemble members Nathaniel Hunt (Moulin Rouge! tour)Chase Peacock (Swept Away), Preston Taylor (Moulin Rouge! tour), and Chase Maxwell (Wicked).

Playing their final performances March 30 will be Raymond Edward Baynard and Pascal Pastrana as well as Ricketts, John Zdrojeski as Tom Buchanan, and Sara Chase as Myrtle Wilson. (As previously reported, Linedy Genao and original cast member Austin Colby will step into the roles of Myrtle Wilson and Tom Buchanan, respectively, beginning March 31.)

The new Broadway musical recently welcomed Ryan McCartan (FrozenWicked) and Sarah Hyland (Little Shop of Horrors, Modern Family) as, respectively, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.

The cast also currently features Charlie Pollock as George Wilson, Terrence Mann as Wolfsheim, Chase as Myrtle Wilson, Zdrojeski as Tom Buchanan, and Ricketts as Nick Carraway. (Samantha Pauly is currently on medical leave from the production; while the former Six star is on leave, the role of Jordan Baker is covered by understudies Traci Elaine LeeDariana Mullen, and Elena Ricardo.)

Based on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby features music and lyrics by Nathan Tysen (Paradise Square) and Jason Howland (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) and a book by Jonathan Larson Grant winner Kait Kerrigan (The Mad Ones). Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) directs with choreography by Dominique Kelley (Mariah’s Magical Christmas Special).

Set in the Roaring ’20s, the musical follows eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby, who will stop at nothing in his tragic pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman whom he loved in his youth.

The Great Gatsby also has scenic and projection design by Paul Tate de Poo III, costume design by Linda Cho, sound design by Brian Ronan, lighting design by Cory Pattak, and hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe and Rachael Geier.

Arrangements are by Jason Howland, orchestrations are by Howland and Kim Scharnberg, the music director is Daniel Edmonds, and the music producer is Grammy winner Billy Jay Stein for Strike Audio.

Casting is by C12 Casting, and the production stage manager is Brian Bogin. Mark Shacket of Foresight Theatrical serves as executive producer.

The new musical won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
