New City Players Presents the Wildly Entertaining Comedy-Thriller ‘The 39 Steps’

The two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning theatrical masterpiece, The 39 Steps, is set to delight and dazzle audiences at New City Players with its brilliant blend of noir, adventure, and classical Hollywood romance, all wrapped in the journey of a man navigating an existential crisis.

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This theatrical treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance!

This production promises to showcase the incredible versatility of live theatre, where four fearless performers transform into a dizzying array of characters, creating an unforgettable experience that celebrates both the absurdity and artistry of theatrical storytelling.

The 39 Steps represents everything we love about live theatre – the magic of transformation, the power of imagination, and the pure joy of shared laughter,” says artistic director Tim Davis. “This production reminds us that sometimes the best way to navigate life’s chaos is with humor, creativity, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. It’s a love letter to both classic cinema and the limitless possibilities of the stage.”

Praised for its ingenious adaptation and side-splitting comedy, The 39 Steps has captivated audiences worldwide with its unique blend of suspense and slapstick. This production invites audiences to witness a theatrical tour de force that proves four actors, endless imagination, and brilliant writing can create an entire cinematic universe on stage.

Directed by Ali Tallman, an ensemble member of New City Players who has served as an assistant director and dramaturg on several productions, this production tackles the ambitious challenge of transforming four actors into an entire universe of characters. The versatile cast features Brandon Campbell as the unwitting protagonist Richard Hannay (seen in New City Players production of All My Sons) and Camille Schiavone in the demanding triple role of Annabella/Margaret/Pamela. The theatrical heavy lifting falls to Rayner Gabriel (seen in New City Players world premiere of 1000 Miles) and Kalen Edean as “the Clowns,” who tackle the Herculean task of embodying dozens of characters throughout the evening’s escapades.

In addition to 13 performances spread over 3 weekends, New City Players has planned some engaging post-show events that take audiences Beyond the Stage:
