Disney’s hit musical Newsies opened on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre March 29. Directed by Jeff Calhoun with choreography by Christopher Gattelli, the production played 16 previews and 1,004 performances before closing August 24, 2014. Newsies earned eight Tony Award nominations and won Best Original Score and Best Choreography.

Following its concert presentation at City Center Encores! in 2007, Gypsy returned to Broadway, opening at the St. James Theatre on March 27, 2008. The revival, directed by librettist Arthur Laurents, played 27 previews and 332 performances before closing on January 11, 2008. The production garnered seven Tony Awards, winning three: Best Actress in a Musical for Patti LuPone, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Laura Benanti, and Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Boyd Gaines.

Seminal composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim celebrated his birthday March 22. Known for his complex compositions and clever wordplay, Sondheim has earned eight Tony Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement honor in 2008, as well as eight Grammy Awards, one Academy Award, and a Pulitzer throughout his six-decade career on Broadway.

London’s Southwark Playhouse Will Live Stream Concert Production of Preludes
A concert production of Dave Malloy’s Preludes will live stream for three performances only from London’s Southwark Playhouse May 7-8.. Malloy (a Tony nominee for Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) has written a brand new song for the piece, which will get its world premiere in the Southwark concert production.
