Actress/singer Judy Kuhn, known for her emotional phrasing of a song, will be singing 15 plus songs from Broadway musicals and films in concert on Sunday,, February 18 at 7 p.m. at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center in Aventura. The concert is part of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center 2024 Broadway Concert Series that continues on March 10 with Broadway singer Melissa Errico.
“I will be singing from songs that I have performed in Broadway and film musicals and from some timeless Broadway musicals in addition to memorable songs from films. I will be performing without a band, accompanied by my pianist,” said the 65-year-old Kuhn, who is known for singing “Colors of the Wind”, from the 1995 film “Pocahontas”, which won an Academy Award for the song’s composers,
Those attending the concert will experience Kuhn’s soprano voice that surprises with expressive belts that will resonate in the 330 seat Aventura Arts & Cultural Center with its impressive acoustics. Performing with a pianist and without a band will allow Kuhn’s voice to become even more dramatic than what is heard on her recordings.
“It’s not a cliché for me to say that I live to perform live in concert. There is no greater feeling that hearing audience members react to the beautiful, stirring songs that have made the musical theater such an important part of American culture.”
Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Kuhn made her Broadway debut in 1985 in the musical “Drood” that began her long career in musical theater. She was acclaimed for her portrayal of “Cosette” in the musical “Les Miserables”, which earned her a Tony Award nomination as Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Kuhn earned her second Tony Award nomination as Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Florence Vassy in the 1988 musical “Chess”.
She went on to star in the London based West End production of “Metropolis” and was also cast in “Sunset Boulevard” and played the matriarch Golde in the musical “Fiddler On The Roof”.
Kuhn also earned positive reviews for her performances in the Broadway musicals “High Society”, “My Fair Lady”, and “White Christmas”.
Outside of the musical theater, Kuhn performed on television in guest roles in “Law & Order”, recorded songs from Broadway in numerous albums, along with being the voice of “Pocahontas” in the 1995 Disney animated film!
She has performed in concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC and Royal Albert Hall in London, among other venues..
Although Kuhn did not reveal her entire list of songs to be performed at her 90-minute Aventura concert, she promised to include songs from musicals by Broadway composer Richard Rodgers in addition to songs she made famous in “Chess” and other musicals, including “Colors of the Wind” from “Pocahontas”.
