When Symphony of the Americas new musical director Luke Frazier was hired recently by the orchestra, he stated that there will be more innovative programs and that the orchestra will reach out to new audiences in South Florida.
Playwright Norman Shabel, a retired attorney known more for his dramatic plays and novels, has a flair for comedy. His one act play “Are The Lights Still On In Paris?”, written in 2006 and first performed in Philadelphia in 2007, is concluding its three-performance run on Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Jewish Cultural Arts (JCAT) production at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach.
Thousands of fans of ‘Beetlejuice’ came to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami on opening night dressed in attire resembling their favorite characters from the comic horror 1988 “Beetlejuice” film to rejoice in a two act musical version of the cult film. They left dazzled because of the impressive work of the cast, costume and scenic designer and the quality of the music.

Temple Israel of Greater Miami Cantor Rachelle Nelson will showcase the best of Jewish liturgical music and Broadway songs in her upcoming 90 minute concert titled “A Legacy in Melody and Song” on Sunday, April 27 at 4 pm in the sanctuary. The concert will feature, along with Nelson, more than 20 cantors, opera singers and soloists who will join Nelson for what will be her final concert at Temple Israel.

Playwright David Auburn’s drama “Summer, 1976”, running now through April 20 at GableStage in Coral Gables, is a dramatic story of how two women who seem to have nothing in common eventually come to appreciate their differences over a period of close to five decades.
Pianist Catherine Lan will perform “Piano Concerto No. 3” by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev to highlight the final concert of the 27th season of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra season taking place on Wednesday, April 9 at The Parker in Ft. Lauderdale and Thursday, April 10 at New World Center in Miami Beach. The SFSO will also perform 19th century Austrian composer Anton Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 4” in the April concerts that begin at 7:30 p.m. at both venues.
The 1964 Broadway production of the Jerry Bock-Sheldon Harnick musical “Fiddler On The Roof” has been performed thousands of times on the stage, but Zoetic Stage Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer found a novel way of retelling the story of the famed 19th century Russian Jewish milkman Tevye seeking to feel safe with his Jewish family in the village of Anatevka while attempting to marry off his eldest daughter according to the laws of Jewish tradition.
It seems that South Florida audiences never tire of either seeing the jukebox musical “Jersey Boys” or hearing the songs of Frankie Valli, the famed singer whose life was portrayed in “Jersey Boys”.
“Propaganda Machine”, an annual sketch comedy show, is proving to be an ideal showcase for a cast of 14 comedians who have the flair and energy to perform in 20 hilarious sketches over 90 minutes through March 15 at the Villain Theater in the Little Haiti district of Miami.
