When a majority of the South Florida community is made up of Latine people, you would think that more stories being presented would reflect that – but unfortunately the opposite tends to be the reality.
If you didn’t know, Slow Burn Theatre Co. is currently putting on their iteration of the classic tale of “Mary Poppins” at the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater. The musical is a stage adaptation of the original movie, but here in south Florida, the magic feels extra real. South Florida Theater Magazine was present on opening night of Saturday, March 25, to report back that the next generation of theater-goers is well on its way to centerstage.
When a pair of kissing cousins are among the more well adjusted characters in a given play, you should probably know that you’re in some pretty grim territory. While I can imagine some theatregoers being put off by the dark subject matter ofAugust: Osage County, which centers around a suspected suicide and delves into addiction, incest, and multiple instances of adultery, just to name a few, I can think of few other reasons that anyone would be dissatisfied with Palm Beach Dramaworks’ incredibly well-orchestrated production of this consummately entertaining play.
When A’Keyah Dasia Williams took the stage at the recent National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) of Florida drama competition, her outstanding performance of three different monologues impressed the esteemed panel of judges.

While it isn’t a play technically about him, the playwright Aurin Squire has put together a coming-of-age journey that uses Michael Jackson as a metaphor. This world premiere play focuses on a group of friends, the main and only members of the Opa-Locka Michael Jackson Fan Club, and their hopeful attempt at creating the perfect mural of their musical idol.
The “7 friendship” theory has existed for well over a long time, but thanks to the biggest social media platform TikTok, it has become a new trend for users of the platform to create and share the aforementioned viral videos. You usually learn about friendship statistics and theories in philosophy class by a philosopher who focused their efforts on studying friendship patterns throughout History. I did at least. But, it wasn’t until a 60-second slideshow put to fun music featuring the seven types of friendship, that I learned what the “7 Friends” theory was.
If you think you might be offended by simulated sex, extensive drug references, or toilet humor, Trainspotting is probably not the play for you. However, if you’re a fan of the film—or are up for something a little more out there in your theatregoing adventures—then you might want to make a priority of catching the upcoming final weekend of what is certainly among the craziest productions I’ve ever been in the cast of.
Afro Cuban funk musician Cimafunk and Rhythm and Blues band Kool & The Gang will each perform in “The Final Set” series of two concerts on March 31 and April 1 respectively at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens at the Miami Open tennis tournament that is currently taking place now through April 2.
