New City Players is proud to announce their upcoming production of our original radio play adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Inspired by the success of our 2022 production of It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, this new take on the beloved tale was written by NCP ensemble member Tyler Johnson Grimes, who received a Carbonell nomination for creating the prior production’s foley sound effects.
Once again, the play will take place at fictional radio station WNCP, this time in 1971. There, a group of actors has gathered to perform in a broadcast of A Christmas Carol, a treasured annual tradition. But because Scrooge-like manager Alastair Filmore is about to sell off the station, this will likely be the last time they get the chance…unless, of course, an infusion of Christmas spirit might be the thing to change his heart.
As this behind-the-scenes story increasingly comes to parallel the story of A Christmas Carol itself, the result is an enchanting, family-friendly show that has all the timeless impact of the original along with plenty of fresh twists for audiences to enjoy. Grimes will be designing another festive foley soundscape for the production, and also returning from It’s A Wonderful Life will be Timothy Mark Davis as director and four of the play’s cast members: Marlo Rodriguez, Carlos Ayaleto, Noah Levine, and Caroline Dopson. Joining them will be newcomers Laura Argo and Gustavo Garcia.
In the spirit of the show’s focus on giving back, New City Players will also be partnering with Handy, a local non-profit dedicated to empowering at-risk youth through providing programming and resources. We will be raising awareness of their Thanksgiving food drive, hosting a toy drive at the show during the first few weeks of our run, and inviting Handy students and staff to join us free of charge at a Christmas Carol performance.
A Christmas Carolwill run from December 2-23 (Thursdays-Saturdays at 8pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm). Performances will take place at Island City Stage (2304 N. Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors, 33305). Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for seniors (65+), and $25 for students (under 25 with ID), with the exception of Thursday night performances, on which $25 tickets will be available for all, and opening night, on which an additional $5 per ticket will include a post-show reception sponsored by Marc Martorana and Commissioner Don D’Arminio.
Tickets can be purchased at www.newcityplayers.org/season or by calling (954)-376-6114. In conjunction with the production, the company will also be hosting weekly post-show talkbacks after every Sunday show that further explore the themes and process of the play.
