The 45th Annual Carbonell Awards Announces Winners in First Live Ceremony Since 2019
From 20 Categories, Miami New Drama Wins Seven Awards, Four to Area Stage, and Slow Burn Theatre Nets Three
Nine Theater & Arts Legends Honored with Special Awards
(South Florida – November 2022) Gary Schweikhart, board president of the Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s Theatre & Arts Honors, today announced that the 45th annual awards—the first live ceremony since 2019—attracted nearly 500 theater activists and enthusiasts.
What includes a taste of Italy’s vibrant dance scene and a new, contemporary spin on the classic ballet The Nutcracker? That would be Dance NOW! Miami’s Program I, on Saturday, December 10, when this leading Florida ensemble world premieres their new piece Clara and share the stage with Compagnia Opus Ballet, direct from Florence for their U.S. debut. Taking place at the Miami Theater Center in Miami Shores, the evening will be an unusual – and racy – season performance.
Miami, FL – October 29, 2022 – City Theatre (@citytheatremia) and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) proudly present the Southeastern Premiere of Heidi Schreck’s WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME, a buoyant and provocative examination by one woman of her civil rights and wrongs. A New York Times critic’s pick, a Tony Award nominee, and Pulitzer Prize finalist when it premiered in 2019, South Florida audiences will enjoy City Theatre’s production of the award-winning Broadway hit, WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME directed by Margaret M. Ledford and presented as part of the Arsht Center’s Theater Up Close series.
Acclaimed Miami-based dance pioneer, Karen Peterson, and her mixed-ability KPD Dancers are back in South Florida this week to highlight their Fourth Annual Forward Motion Dance Festival and Conference of Physically Integrated Dance (FM4).
The shows will feature the KPD ensemble and another troupe, Full Radius Dance. Both groups focus on the work of disabled and non-disabled performers, joining together on stage to craft unusual and entertaining pieces.
From award winning South Florida Actor/Writer/Director, Paul Louis, comes the film, “Army Men”.The dramatic short film is based on a true story about Louis’ childhood friendship, which ended in tragedy. “Army Men” tells the story of a middle aged Miami based artist who returns to the tough battlefield of his childhood neighborhood in Queens, NY, only to be haunted by the memories of his late best friend.
Louis says it’s a story of friendship, loss and regret, and hopes to bring awareness of mental illness, especially in children.
A rainy deluge outside didn’t dampen spirits inside The Addison restaurant in Boca Raton the night of Monday, Oct. 17, site of the annual Silver Palm Awards gala honoring actors, directors, set designers and performance troupes for excellence at stages in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The gala – which served as a major post-COVID get-together last year for the awards that were first presented in 2008 – drew a full-house crowd to the famed Boca dining location, despite the weather that messed with travel and forced valets to break out large umbrellas to escort patrons to and from their cars.
MIAMI – Oct. 15, 2022– Brévo Theatre (@brevo_theatre) is proud to present “Funnyhouse of a Negro” as its final production of the 2021-2022 season. The off-broadway performance originally created by Adrienne Kennedy in 1964 will take place on October 22 and October 23 at 7 p.m. at the Proscenium Theatre at the Little Haiti Cultural Center located at 212 NE 59th Terrace, Miami, Florida 33137. General admission tickets are $25.00. Tickets can be purchased at Brévo Theatre.
“Funnyhouse of a Negro,” directed by Zaylin Yates and part of the theatre’s “Dans le avant-garde” series, is a poetic and symbolic investigation into one woman’s mind before her death. Sarah has created four different personas as a way to grapple with her own self-hatred: Queen Victoria, the Duchess of Hapsburg, Jesus and Patrice Lumumba. With these four characters at her side, Sarah tries to make sense of her conception (from rape), her life without her parents, and the creeping insanity that she feels all around her. The cast for the show includes Jessica Raquel as Negro Sarah; Jamall Lynch as Patrice Lumumba, Naomi Ray-Barnett as Queen Victoria Regina, Chasity Hart as the Duchess of Hapsburg and Omari White as Jesus and Funnyhouse Man. It also stars Onyekachi “Onyi” Anyagaligbo as Sarah’s Landlord/Funnyhouse Woman.
The October 23 show will be followed by a symposium entitled “Between Two Worlds,” that deals with colorism and self-identity. This symposium will feature a panel of special guests and focus on mental and emotional healing for biracial men and women. A partnership between Brévo Theatre and South Florida AfroPride, the session will tackle topics on how the community can seek emotional healing. Learning tools to practice self-love and embracing all the things that define our humanity. Mental illness, self-hate, and the need to be socially accepted are issues that currently plague the Black and BIPOC communities. Admission to the symposium will be free and will directly follow the performance. The Symposium will also be streamed online via Zoom and Facebook Live.
“This is a play that is near and dear to our hearts. We’re hoping to continue the dialogue around mental health that Kennedy began more than 60 years ago, as it is a topic that continues to be relevant today, especially among Black and Brown communities,” says Zaylin Yates, co-founder of Brévo Theatre.

Festival of the Arts BOCA is preparing for its 17th season in 2023 with confidence that the COVID pandemic that mucked up many of its recent presentations has subsided enough for the traditional event to “go live” for its entirety starting March 3.
“From the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and Young Singers of the Palm Beaches to the Rotary Club Future Stars Competition, this year’s program highlights our mission of promoting the spirit and talent of our youth,” said Joanna Marie Kaye, the Festival’s executive director.
