The name of playwright Maria Irene Fornes may not immediately resonate with South Florida’s theater-going public. But like many overlooked female geniuses throughout history, this is an oversight that needs to be rectified at once. And I’m confident it will be. Because Fornes – an early pioneer of the 1960’s Off-Off Broadway movement and originator of site-specific immersive theater – has been embraced by none other than our own creatively out-of-the-box superstar, Nicole Stodard, founder and artistic director of Thinking Cap Theatre (TCT).

Tall Tales Told in the Woods

With the premiere of Into the Woods at the Broward Center, the Tri-Counties area welcomes another season with Slow Burn Theatre Company. South Florida Theater Magazine attended the opening night of the performance to a near soldout crowd, and after watching the fairy tale unfold, it is understood why this company seems to have such a strong place in their local community, and greater. Overall, despite the following critiques, I thoroughly enjoy watching this company’s productions.

Ground has been broken on The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Immigrante, which will be the neighborhood’s first flexible theatre.

New York City is getting a new theatre, specifically Washington Heights and Inwood. Lin-Manuel and Luis A. Miranda Jr.’s Miranda Family Fund and NewYork-Presbyterian have each pledged $1 million towards the building of The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Immigrante, which will become the neighborhood’s first flexible theatre. The theatre is expected to open its doors in 2026.

The Wick Theatre Announces Musical Theatre Scholarship and Internship Program

Theatre Loving Palm Beach High School Students Will Soon Be Singing “I Hope I Get it!”

The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton has announced two new scholarships and an internship program for Palm Beach County students who love musical theatre. In honor of the cultural organization’s 10th anniversary, The Wick is hosting a competition open to Palm Beach County High School students who demonstrate show stopping talent. In addition, the theatre is taking applications for student interns who possess a prowess in theatre-realm and are interested in learning about the  industry across all departments. Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded, one for dance and one for voice. Application deadline for both the scholarships and internships is December 4, 2023, with the forms and details available at www.thewick.org.
